Today's NYT Connections Sports Edition Hints & Answers - July 1, 2026 (#646)

Today's Sports Edition mixes the literal (where you sit) with the lateral (four famous Ryans). The Lions group is the pivot — once you see that England, Detroit, Penn State and Columbia all roar, the CONCACAF and Ryan groups fall into place.

How to play NYT Connections: Sports Edition

The Sports Edition plays exactly like Connections — a 4×4 grid of sixteen items to sort into four hidden groups of four — but every puzzle is built from the world of sports: players, teams, cities, nicknames and stats. You get four mistakes before the game ends, so lock in the group you're surest about first.

Tips that work every day

  • Start with the most literal group. The straightforward category (often yellow) is usually the safest first guess.
  • Watch for crossover names. A city or surname can belong to more than one sport — that overlap is the trap.
  • Think last names and first names. A group can hinge on a shared first name (four "Ryans") or a shared nickname (teams called the Lions).
  • Leave purple for last. The trickiest group is easiest to solve by elimination once the others are set.

About these hints
